United States History - start to finish
Unit One - Encounter, Exploration, Early Settlement, and ColonizationYou have already heard the little rhyme, "In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue." a simple statement with so much more complexity. In this unit we will discuss the motives for exploration and the first encounters with the Native Americans in the New World. We will talk about the first colonies, and the establishment of slavery in Jamestown in 1919. Looking back, colonization seems like such a simple idea, but in this unit we will discuss the barriers that hardships that so many colonies faced when they first established.
Period Five - The Gilded AgeThe Gilded Age takes a look into the United States as a formed nation. After repairing from the Civil War we begin to establish ourselves as a world power. The Gilded Age takes a look at the the issues we faced with in our nation and our government, as democracy is an ever evolving idea and concept. Corruption existed and becomes a issues that has to be addressed. We will look into the economic activities of our nation and how we addressed the issues of the Gilded Age during the Progressive Era.

Unit Two - American Revolution and the Early National AmericaIn 1776, our Founding Fathers committed high treason! The decision to sign the Declaration of Independence specifically went against the rule of the English monarch, King George III. In this unit we will look at the different battles of the American Revolution, the establishment of our Founding Fathers, and the different forms of governmental approach we used prior to signing the United States Constitution. We will look at the successes and failures that we had as a new nation.
Period Six - The Early Twentieth CenturyThe 20th century was plagued by war. That is the easiest way to look at it. What issues led to World War I? What issues led to World War II? In this unit we will look at the imperialistic ideas and views of the United States that established it as THE world power of the time period. We will discuss our ideas on neutrality and explain the reasons for U.S. entry into both World Wars. We will also look at the issues that we faced during the interwar period between WWI and WWII. The Roaring Twenties as a time of economic prosperity that was followed by the worst economic depression our nation has ever seen! We will also discuss how WWII solidified our position as a global power.

Unit Three- The Age of Jefferson and JacksonJefferson and Jackson, never has there been two different types of men! Jefferson, a Founding Father, and author of the Declaration of Independence, will set the stage for the founding of political parties and a step away from the government that we had established under George Washington. A couple decades later, Jackson will extend male suffrage and work more towards establishing a government for the people, by the people. However, he was not without his flaws. Many often suffer as a price for progress, as we will see was the story for many Native Americans in what later became known as the Trail of Tears. We will also begin to look at the cruelties of slavery, and the founding acts of the abolitionists movement.
Period Seven - The Cold War Era "The enemy of my enemy, is my friend!" Truer words have never been spoken. The Soviet Union was one of our greatest allies in both world wars, but became our most threatening enemy after in what would become known as the Cold War. In this unit we will talk about how the development of nuclear weapons was a doubled edge sword, and how this development led to decades of uncertainty that always had the looming threat of nuclear war. We will also discuss the reasons behind the Korean and Vietnam War, and discuss the governmental trends that were established as a result.

Period Four- The Civil War and ReconstructionThe Civil War was fought over state's rights and not slavery! This is a statement you have surely heard before. In this unit, we will look at the validity of that statement. We will look at the many causes of the Civil War, as well as address the primary, underlying issue of slavery ... which has been building up for nearly a hundred years! We will discuss the formation of the Confederacy and look at the effects of the South having lost the Civil War. We will move beyond that to Reconstruction and look into the founding efforts of Civil Rights. We will also begin to look at the different ideas of abolishing slavery and wanting equal rights.
Period Eight - Contemporary AmericaContemporary America takes over where the height of the Cold War left off. In this unit you will learn about the many scandals of our nations presidents! We will discuss the growing trends of the Republican and Democratic Party, and will look into the economic and governmental trends of the time. Here we will also talk about terrorism and the attacks on 9/11. Additionally, the response by President Bush to those attack.
